Since 1766, a name synonymous with art, expertise and excellence — and the foundation of our luxury real estate business.
Founded in London in 1766, Christie's established itself over the centuries as one of the most prestigious auction houses in the world. A name that became, everywhere, synonymous with art, expertise and excellence — and the foundation on which our real estate business rests.
On 5 December 1766, James Christie held his first sale in London. More than two hundred and fifty years later, the house that bears his name remains an absolute reference in the international art market, with its historic salerooms on King Street in London and at the Rockefeller Center in New York.
Christie's is not the oldest auction house — others came before it — but it rose among the most influential, shaping taste and market records since the eighteenthe century. Since 1998 it has belonged to Groupe Artémis, the Pinault family holding company.
Old Master paintings, Impressionist and modern art, contemporary art, jewellery, watches, rare wines: each year Christie's stages some of the most closely watched sales on the planet. In November 2017, the Salvator Mundi attributed to Leonardo da Vinci sold there for 450.3 million dollars — the most expensive work ever sold at auction.
That authority over the art market is no small thing: it defines a particular relationship to rarity, to provenance and to value. It is exactly that eye which Christie's has since chosen to turn on luxury real estate.
Only Christie's — an art auction house since 1766 — and its real estate arm can offer such a bridge between the world of art and that of the finest houses.
The move from art to real estate came as a natural one: the same clientele, the same demand for rarity, the same care given to every piece. Christie's International Real Estate was born of that continuity — bringing to an exceptional property the same level of expertise, discretion and international reach as to a major work of art.
Discover the Christie's International Real Estate network — the world's leading luxury real estate network — and how it presents the finest addresses around the world today.
